Flow Switch Working Principle
A piston flow switch is a type of flow switch used to monitor and control the flow of liquids in a system. It operates based on the movement of a piston inside a cylindrical chamber.
How a Piston Flow Switch Works:
Flow Chamber: The switch contains a cylindrical chamber with a piston inside. The chamber is part of the flow path of the fluid in the system.
Piston Movement: As fluid flows through the chamber, it pushes against the piston. The piston is usually spring-loaded, and the force exerted by the fluid needs to overcome the spring force for the piston to move.
Activation Point: When the fluid flow rate reaches a certain threshold, the piston moves to a specific position within the chamber. This position is typically detected by a magnetic sensor or a mechanical contact switch.
Signal Output: Once the piston reaches the activation point, it triggers an electrical signal. This signal can be used to activate an alarm, shut down equipment, or initiate other processes, depending on the application.
Return to Normal State: If the fluid flow drops below the threshold, the spring returns the piston to its original position, deactivating the signal.
Types of Flow Switches:
- Mechanical Flow Switches: These have a mechanical switch or a microswitch that is directly activated by the movement of the piston.
- Magnetic Flow Switches: These switches use a magnet attached to the piston, which interacts with a magnetic reed switch located outside the flow chamber.
- Adjustable Piston Flow Switches: These switches allow the user to adjust the flow rate at which the piston activates the switch.
