Level Switch, Level Sensor, Flow Switch and Flow Sensor Summary for Robotic Pool Cleaner
Level and flow sensing devices are the core foundation for safe operation, performance optimization and intelligent upgrading of robotic pool cleaners, delivering three core values: safety protection, performance regulation, and intelligent navigation. They prevent dry running and overheating of pumps, water damage to electronic compartments, and enable real-time filter clogging detection with dynamic pump power adjustment. High-end models also rely on depth sensing to optimize cleaning paths and wall-climbing strategies. The sensor configuration is determined by the product’s power supply type (corded / cordless battery-powered) and market positioning (entry-level home use / mid-range / high-end / commercial). The systematic breakdown is as follows.
Water Level and Immersion Detection: Core Sensing for Basic Safety
This category of sensors identifies the robot’s immersion status and monitors internal water accumulation, which is directly linked to pump start/stop logic and hardware safety protection.
Installed on the side wall or bottom of the robot housing, they detect whether the robot is fully submerged and trigger the start/stop of the cleaning program.
It relies on exposed dual stainless steel electrodes to detect the conductivity of water to determine the immersion status. It features extremely low cost and compact structure, with proven reliability in chlorinated pool water. The drawbacks are that electrodes are prone to limescale buildup and fail in deionized water. It is widely used in entry-level corded home pool cleaners.
Mounted on the inner wall of the plastic housing, it identifies water level through the difference in dielectric constant between water and air, with no direct contact with water. It has no corrosion risk and a long service life, and is mostly used in high-end cordless models and external water level detection for sealed electronic compartments.
Based on the total internal reflection principle of infrared prisms, it distinguishes light path changes between air and water environments. It features high accuracy, fast response and compact size, and is mostly used in flagship home and high-end cordless pool cleaners.
Mostly installed at the bottom of the motor compartment as secondary redundant protection, it detects the minimum water level and internal water accumulation to prevent pump dry running.
Driven by buoyancy, the float rises and falls to trigger the on/off of the internal reed switch. It features simple structure and low cost, but has moving parts that are prone to jamming by hair and debris. Currently it is mostly used in older models and as backup detection for internal leakage.
Electronic Compartment Leak Detection Sensor
A standard safety component for cordless battery-powered models, installed inside the electronic component compartment.
It adopts the conductive electrode principle. When water enters the compartment, the conductivity changes, immediately triggering an alarm, stopping the pump and disconnecting the battery to avoid short-circuit damage to the circuit.
Flow and Filtration Status Sensing: Core Support for Performance Optimization
This category of sensors monitors pump circulation status and identifies filter clogging level, which is the key to ensuring cleaning efficiency and extending pump service life.
The most commonly used flow detection solution in modern robotic pool cleaners, mostly installed at the pump outlet or in the main water channel.
Water flow drives the turbine with built-in magnetic steel to rotate, and the external Hall element collects pulse signals to accurately convert real-time flow and cumulative flow. The typical applicable flow range is 20–120 L/min. It has the advantages of high accuracy, low power consumption, small size and long service life, and can realize filter clogging warning, dynamic adjustment of pump speed, and filter element life estimation. It is widely used in mid-range home and high-end cordless models.
A mechanical flow detection solution for entry-level models, also known as a vane switch.
Water flow pushes the paddle to deflect, and when the flow reaches the threshold, it triggers the internal reed switch, only outputting on/off signals to judge whether the water flow meets the standard. It features low cost and easy integration, but has mechanical wear and average impurity resistance, and is only used for basic dry running protection.
The mainstream solution for commercial cleaners, which indirectly calculates flow rate and clogging degree by detecting the pressure difference before and after the filter.
It has no moving parts, extremely strong anti-clogging ability and high reliability, and can accurately identify the dirt status of the filter, adapting to large-flow and high-impurity commercial pool scenarios.
Motor Current Virtual Sensing (Cost-Optimized Solution)
A software solution without additional hardware, which indirectly estimates the flow status by monitoring the operating current change of the pump motor. When the filter is clogged and the flow drops, the pump load changes and the current fluctuates accordingly. The controller judges the clogging degree or dry running status based on this.
It has zero hardware cost and higher system reliability, with slightly lower detection accuracy than dedicated sensors. It is widely used for auxiliary judgment in all tiers of models, and entry-level models often use it to replace dedicated flow sensors.
Water Depth Pressure Sensing: Auxiliary Perception for High-End Navigation
An intelligent sensing component for high-end models, mostly adopting MEMS water pressure sensors installed at the bottom of the body.
Based on the hydrostatic pressure principle (P=ρgh), it converts real-time water depth to realize three major functions: first, estimating the operating water depth and automatically switching between floor cleaning, wall cleaning and surface cleaning modes; second, assisting wall-climbing navigation and optimizing wall attachment force and walking strategy; third, identifying steps, slopes and out-of-water status to improve adaptability to complex pool environments. It is only standard on high-end cordless and flagship home models.

Common Selection Principles for Pool Scenarios
The special working conditions of swimming pools — chlorinated water, high impurities and long-term immersion — put forward general requirements for sensors:
High ingress protection rating: Water-exposed components shall meet IP68 long-term immersion protection, and electronic compartments shall meet corresponding sealing levels.
Corrosion resistance: Structural parts in contact with water shall be resistant to chlorine water and disinfectant corrosion, and metal parts shall preferably be made of 316 stainless steel or engineering plastics.
Impurity resistance: Electronic solutions without moving parts are preferred, or matched with pre-filters to reduce the risk of jamming by hair and debris.
High reliability: Dual-sensor redundant design is recommended for core safety points to reduce the risk of equipment damage caused by single-point failure.
